Tangipahoa Parish shooting (copy)

A man was hospitalized in stable condition after being shot by a Cameron Parish sheriff’s deputy Friday evening during a reported kidnapping and vehicle pursuit, officials said.

The shooting occurred on Louisiana Highway 27 near Wakefield Road, according to Louisiana State Police, who are investigating the incident at the request of the Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The preliminary investigation found that deputies received a 911 call from a woman who reported she had been kidnapped by a man. Deputies located the suspect vehicle and pursued it, officials said.

The vehicle stopped near the Cameron Ferry, where the woman tried to get out. A deputy stopped his patrol vehicle and got out as the man prevented the woman from leaving, according to investigators.

The vehicle then moved toward the deputy, who fired his weapon and struck the man, officials said. The man received medical aid at the scene before being airlifted to an out-of-area hospital, where he remained in stable condition.

No deputies were injured.

Louisiana State Police detectives are investigating. The investigation remains active, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
