One Acadiana bakery has landed on list of legendary bakeries in the South.
LeJeune's Bakery in Jeanerette is a family-owned bakery that has remained in the same family for six generations. The bakery was recognized by the magazine as a must-visit bakery in the South.
Hollywood LeJeune, a baker at LeJeune’s, said the business has maintained its authenticity over the years, which has made him proud to remain there for more than two decades.
“It’s the same through and through which makes this place unique,” LeJeune said. “The main reason I’ve been here so long is because every place doesn’t do it the way they do here. Same recipe, same family and that’s something special.”
Known for its French bread and old-fashioned ginger cakes, the bakery’s French bread and ginger cakes are still made using “time-honored methods passed down for over a century.”
In 2011, The bakery was added to the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior. According to its National Register nomination, the bakery still produces its bread largely by hand using decades-old equipment and continues to use many of the same techniques that helped make it a South Louisiana institution.
